The Halifax Cycling Handbook is a handy pocket-sized guide containing many of the first things you should know about getting around Halifax by bike, from what kind of bike to buy to winter riding tips to the rules of the road and good cycling habits.

We've translated our Handbooks into six languages:  Arabic, Farsi, French, Mandarin, Mi’kmaw, and Spanish.

In the spring, HCC Handbook free printed copies will be available at Halifax public library branches, ISANS offices, the YMCA and The Ecology Action Centre and many local bike shops. Stay tuned for the release date. We'll have all 7 languages (english included), available at our HCC Tent at events around the city throughout the cycling season.

Once we release the 2023 printed edition, this spring, you'll be able to pick it up any of our Handbooks at 5557 Cunard Street, 2nd Floor in the lobby of Common Good Solutions.

Online Cycling Handbook Advantage:  All seven versions are always available on your smart phones, tablets, laptop, and desktop computers.

  • Easier to read: The pocket-size printed handbooks are short and small, too small to share all the knowledge we want to share about cycling. Some find the type is hard to read.
  • On-screen: When you open the PDFs, pages will fill the full width of the window of your device. You can enlarge (zoom in) or reduce (zoom out) the size of the type and illustrations for easiest reading.
  • Print single pages or a whole handbook from your computer on letter-size paper. You can enlarge the page images to fill the whole width of the paper – the zoom factor will be about 175%; you have the option of printing in black & white or in full colour (which usually takes longer).
  • Keeping the Online Handbooks up to date and expanding on the content.   Halifax Cycling Coalition will update the Online Handbook with Cycling In-Depth files as laws, regulations, bikes or bike stores change.   And if you are on our email list, you’ll get a notice of when we do this.

The handbook includes:

  • Reasons to ride

  • Getting to know your bike

  • Ride preparation

  • Rules of the road

  • Cycling safety

  • Intersection safety

  • Cycling safety

  • Intersection safety

  • Getting from A to E (Employment, Education, and Essential services)

  • Cycling as a family

  • Types of bikeways

  • Cycling resources
