30 Days of Biking

Registration is closed for this event
Join us for 30 Days of Biking - a month-long celebration of bicycles. We have events every week, open to the whole family.

After any winter, even a mild one, it's always great to get back on the bike (unless you're one of those folks who never stops!) Take the 30 Days of Biking pledge, then join us at one of the following events:

  • Wrap-up ride, Saturday, April 30th, noon. Celebrate the completion of your 30 Day challenge with us. We'll do a big tour of the Halifax Peninsula, culminating with a much-needed pint at Charm School Pub. This ride (and the pub) are family-friendly, but kids are required to purchase a snack (as little as $3) to be in the pub. The wrap-up ride is a fundraiser for the HCC. The admission to the ride is $25, and includes a sample tray at the pub. Volunteers and monthly donors get free admission, beer is extra.
  • Friday, April 1, 7:30-9am, kick-off mixer at the Downtown Halifax Business Commission. Free coffee and snacks. Come chat with us about your commute, Halifax's bicycle lane projects, and your biggest requests for bicycle infrastructure in this laid-back event. 1546 Barrington Street, Halifax.
  • Sunday, April 3, 2pm - family and friends bike ride #1. Join us at the Maritime Lawn & Garden Parking lot (across from Brooklyn Warehouse). We'll do a tour of our favourite route to downtown, then come back via the hospital & university district, showing the great commuting upgrades that have happened for people travelling from the West End to Downtown and the universities/hospitals. HCC volunteers will point out pending upgrades and answer any questions you may have about future upgrades. Free.
  • Sunday, April 10, 10am - family and friends bike ride #2. Cancelled.
  • Wednesday, April 13th, 5-7pm, Passion for Place Lecture Series, "Change is good. Transformation is better." Join us at the Garden View Restaurant, 174 Main Street, Dartmouth, to learn how the Main Street area can be transformed into a pedestrian, bicycle rider, and transit user-friendly part of town. Futher details on this exciting event will be available soon.
  • Sunday, April 17, 2pm - family and friends bike ride #3. Discover the Chain of Lakes Trail - and leave the car at home. We'll show you our all-ages-and-abilities access route to the trail, and point out some shortcuts for more adventurous riders. The route will take us to Bayers Lake, at which point we will pause to discuss pending improvements for the Mainland Linear Trail, the Long Lake Trail and the access from these trails to the Halifax Peninsula. The ride will return via the same route. Meet at the Maritime Lawn and Garden parking lot, across from Brooklyn Warehouse.
  • Friday, April 22, 6pm - Earth Day ride. We only have one planet. As part of 30 Days of Biking we invite you to join us for an evening bike ride, touring the Halifax Peninsula, then stopping for a refreshing drink at a local watering hole. The ride is free. Join us beforehand for the grand opening of the newly-renovated Ecology Action Centre headquarters. We'll be leaving from the EAC at 6pm sharp, so come a few minutes early to register and say hi. This is a family-friendly ride.
  • Sunday, April 24, 2pm - family & friends bike ride #4. Explore Dartmouth's ocean views, starting with the Dartmouth Waterfront Greenway, and riding to the Shearwater Flyer Trail. Depending on trail conditions the ride will run to the Salt Marsh Trail, which provides convenient access to the Lawrencetown Beach during the summer (have you taken your surfboard there by bike? Share a picture with us!). We will discuss a different route to Downtown Dartmouth, which the Penhorn Lake Area Trail Association is working on. The connection in PLATA's proposal crossing Portland Street/Highway 111 is not yet navigable by bicycle. In the near future, this trail could provide convenient access from Portland Hills to Downtown Dartmouth by bicycle, without ever seeing a car, by tying together an existing network of community trails. Our ride will begin at Alderney Landing, at the south end of the site (near the foot of Portland Street).
