Urban Cycling 101 – Part 1

Registration is closed for this event
Join us for part 1 of the Urban Cycling 101 course online on Zoom! Learn the basics of cycling in an urban environment in this 1.5-hour course.

Do you want to get around the city by bike? The Urban Cycling 101 Course will help you build your confidence to cycle on urban streets and feel safe riding in mixed traffic in HRM. Take the course and find a sense of freedom that comes with the simple act of riding a bike.

The Urban Cycling 101 course is intended for adults (18 years of age and older) who know how to ride a bike but want to deepen their skills for riding with traffic in an urban setting. The course is also helpful if you have been riding in the city for a while, but you still have a few questions about the rules of the road.

This is the first part of the course, which consists of 1.5 hours of classroom learning online using the Zoom platform. You will receive a PDF of the course booklet before the course so you can follow along as we go through it. There will be lots of time to ask questions about cycling in the Halifax Regional Municipality. After you have taken this portion of the course, you can take the 2-hour in-person practical skills session. In that session, we practise shoulder checking, cycling in a straight line, balance, and other skills for safe cycling in a parking lot, and then head out for a short on-street bike ride. You do need a bike for the practical skills session. If you don’t have a bike or access to a bike, you can rent one from Halifax Cycles.

Topics Covered Include:

  • Bike and helmet fit
  • ABC bike check
  • Road user rights and responsibilities
  • Shoulder checking and signaling
  • Traffic dynamics
  • Principles for cycling in traffic
  • Where to ride
  • Cycling crashes and collisions

To participate you must pre-register on this page. The online session is free, and we are welcoming donations to help us cover the costs to deliver the course. We want to make the sessions as financially accessible as possible by offering them at no charge, so if you are able to contribute financially to help cover the cost of your registration (and maybe another person's) that would have a big impact on us to continue to deliver the course and make it available to as many people as possible! Our cost to deliver the full course (the online and in-person sessions) to one person is $70). We are extremely grateful for your support.
