Get Involved in Winter Bike Week

We are seeking sponsors and partners for the 2021 Winter Bike Week, taking place from February 7th to 13th, 2021. There are lots of ways for individuals, businesses, and organizations to get involved!

So, what is Winter Bike Week, you may ask? Winter Bike Week is a seven-day celebration of winter cycling. We have been hosting Winter Bike Week for several years now, after being inspired by international Winter Bike to Work Day. This year Winter Bike to Work Day is themed “WinterBikeALoopza” and participants are encouraged to bike in a loop in their neighbourhood if they aren’t commuting to work or school. Our event line-up will be virtual so participants can join from the comfort of their home. We will also include some prompts and activities for participants to get out and enjoy HRM by bike with their own bubble. Each year we partner with many groups and businesses to make Winter Bike Week a success. Read on to learn how you can get involved.

Organize a Virtual Event or Activity

Businesses and organizations can organize their own virtual events and activities under the Winter Bike Week banner. You could host a virtual film screening, create a cycling scavenger hunt game, host an online cycling workshop, do some data collection or research during the week — the possibilities are endless! Events can take place between February 7th and 13th, 2021. Please reach out to us at contact@cyclehalifax.ca if you would like to host an event or activity.

Offer a Deal or Discount for People Cycling

Businesses could offer a deal for people who arrive by bike or who share a photo of themselves cycling on social media. Deals could include free coffee for folks arriving by bike, a 10% discount to cyclists, free yoga or a spin class, or a social media promotion if people tag your businesses. The whole idea is to encourage people to ride their bikes during the week, and to bring some more people into your businesses (in a COVID-19 safe way). If you want to offer a Winter Bike Week deal please let us know at contact@cyclehalifax.ca. We will help promote your deal throughout the week on social media!

Organize a Bike to Work or School Challenge

Encourage employees/colleagues at your workplace or students and teachers at your school to bike to work or school during Winter Bike Week. Get participants to commit to cycle to work or school every day that week and whoever does would win prizes. We can help you develop promotional material, such as posters or a paragraph for a newsletter. We can also offer some prizes to give out to folks who complete the challenge. If your school or workplace wants to do a Winter Bike Week challenge, let us know at contact@cyclehalifax.ca.

Share Your Story at the Bike Minds Halifax: Winter Event

BIKE MINDS is a storytelling event where positive and inspiring bike-related stories are shared in front of an audience from a diverse range of storytellers. The Bike Minds mission is to change the way you think about people who ride bikes. Bike Minds and the Halifax Cycling Coalition are partnering to host Bike Minds Halifax: Winter on Thursday, February 11th beginning at 6pm. We are seeking speakers to share their stories about cycling and winter.

We welcome stories from all members of the cycling community and aim to provide space for storytellers with a diversity of backgrounds and experiences. If you are a woman, visible minority, non-cis-gendered person, Indigenous person, or member of any other underrepresented group in the cycling community, you are invited to self-identify.

All stories submitted should meet these basic criteria:

  • Positive: while every good story involves a challenge or struggle, the story should generally be positive and have a happy ending. Avoid discussing things like politics, collisions, bike theft, etc.
  • Personal: the best stories are as personal as possible. We want to hear about what you did, rather than your organization’s objectives or your opinions.
  • Bike-related: cycling does not need to be the central theme of the story, but should be involved at some point.

So what are you waiting for? Submit your story to us today at contact@cyclehalifax.caLove, lifestyle, sports, family, community, adventure, travel, challenge… the possibilities for themes are endless!

How it Works
  1. After submitting your story idea to us, we will review the submissions and select 5-6 speakers for the event.
  2. If we accept your story we will ask you to confirm your availability by February 1st.
  3. You will need to submit a tagline describing you, a short bio (100 words), a photo of you (preferably with a bike), your pronouns, and any accommodations you require.
  4. At the event, you will have 6-8 minutes to share your story. The event will take place online through Zoom and you are welcome to use presentation slides and share your screen with the audience.
